Forgiving Myself

For years I was a woman shackled by the guilt and shame of my own past, carrying every choice I made while I was still searching in every room I walked into next.

In search of. In search of the meaning of love, the meaning of care, the meaning of being a wife, a mother, a daughter. I was trying to make something out of nothing, cooking from a recipe with no measurements, where every ingredient I reached for was already stale. Broken, but somehow still holding on to something, though I could not always tell you what.

Years and years of making the same poor choices, still in search of, still not finding. There was a faint calling underneath all of it the whole time. I was just too busy pretending to stop long enough to listen.

Then one regular day, nothing marked or planned about it, I stood at my own mirror putting drops in my eyes to cover the redness from another night of crying myself to sleep, and I caught a glimpse of her. A possible sighting of someone redeemable, looking back at me through my own reflection.

So I stopped. And I listened. And a faint voice said, I forgive you. The room held only myself and the mirror, the only two witnesses to the start of a life. Not a finished one. Not a healed one. A life nonetheless.

I am no longer the woman who spent years searching rooms that were never going to hold the answer, chasing love in shapes that could not fit what she was actually asking for. I am the woman who finally came home to herself in front of that mirror, who let a girl who had been begging to be forgiven for a very long time finally hear it. Forgiveness did not arrive because I earned it. It arrived because I finally sat still long enough to receive what had been waiting for me the whole time.

If you have been carrying the same guilt in the same quiet rooms, I want you to know it is closer than you think. Stop. Look at yourself. Really listen. The voice that forgave me has never once stopped speaking. It was only ever waiting for me to go quiet enough to hear it.
